Sewing Hope in Kenya: A Journey Close to Our Hearts

At Melissa’s Stitches, we’ve always believed that sewing is about so much more than fabric and thread. Every stitch tells a story, creates connection, and has the power to transform lives — one stitch at a time.

This June, that belief is taking us farther than ever before.

On June 14th, Melissa and her daughter Sofia will begin a journey to Kenya with Youthlinc as part of a humanitarian service team focused on empowerment, education, and community support. This will also be our very first time in Africa — something that feels both exciting and deeply meaningful to our family.

What makes this experience even more special is that Melissa will not only be sharing sewing skills with women in local communities, but will also be experiencing this mission side-by-side with her daughter. Having Sofia as part of the team makes this journey deeply personal and unforgettable for us both.

Our group is made up of 31 people: 7 adults, 3 youth leaders, and 21 teenagers between the ages of 16 and 17. Together, we’ll spend time serving, learning, and building meaningful connections with the communities we visit.

One of the projects our team will be leading centers around teaching sewing skills to women in local communities. The goal is simple, but powerful: helping women create handmade goods that can generate income, support their families, and encourage long-term self-sufficiency.

Because of the differences in electrical systems and the importance of having access to local maintenance technicians, we plan to purchase sewing machines directly in Kenya. This helps ensure the equipment can continue serving the women long after our team returns home.

Right now, we are also gathering donations of sewing-related materials and supplies that could make a meaningful impact on the workshops. Items such as scissors, thread, fabric, measuring tools, notions, sewing kits, pins, chalk, and other sewing essentials would be incredibly appreciated. Every contribution — no matter how big or small — will go directly into the hands of women eager to learn, create, and build opportunities for themselves and their families.

What makes this experience especially meaningful is that the impact goes both ways.

While the workshops will provide practical skills and opportunities for the local community, this journey will also profoundly shape the young people serving on the trip. They will witness firsthand the value of compassion, empowerment, humanitarian service, and human connection across cultures.

As a small business built around creativity and craftsmanship, this mission feels incredibly personal to us. Sewing has changed our lives in so many ways, and the idea of sharing those skills with others across the world is something we carry with immense gratitude.

At Melissa’s Stitches, we truly believe in the power of sewing to transform lives — one stitch at a time.

We’re honored to be part of this journey, and we can’t wait to share more along the way.

Thank you for supporting Melissa’s Stitches and for believing with us in the power of compassion, creativity, and community.
